Callum Black Targets Top Five on BRC Opener, May 2013

21 year old Callum Black, from Brackley, entered the opening round of the MSA British Rally Championship with high hopes of a good result after finishing in a strong second in class on the recent Somerset Stages Rally.

The Pirelli Richard Burns Foundation Rally is based at Carlisle Racecourse with a ceremonial start in Carlisle Town Centre on Saturday 4th May 2013.  Competitors will tackle some of the most iconic and demanding rally stages in Britain including stages in Northumberland’s Kielder Forest, often referred to in rallying as “Killer Kielder”, due to the frequently high attrition rate amongst competing cars.

Callum says that the Somerset Stages, which he entered following the cancellation of the scheduled opening British Championship round, Rally North Wales, due to bad weather, provided valuable feedback.

As a result the Autosport Technology team have made a number of changes to the set-up of the Millers Oils Citroen DS3 while the event also proved to be a valuable learning curve for Callum and his new co-driver, Welshman James Morgan.

“It was only our second rally together but we get on well together and the partnership is definitely helping me improve my pace. I’m also really pleased with the pace note system that James and I developed with the help of Nicky Grist, I think that will be a huge factor in my development over the duration of the season. ”

Describing himself as “quietly confident” ahead of the weekend’s event, Callum adds “I would like to think top five is a possibility and I would be delighted if we could achieve that. It’s important to get some points on the board, especially with 5 rounds to count out of the 6 now (after Rally North Wales was cancelled). We need to keep out of trouble; I think a few people will be trying hard, maybe too hard, so we have to be sensible! There is definitely potential for punctures so we have to use our heads and push in the right places.”
